Yosemite America the Beautiful Quarter

Obverse:

  • Features a portrait of George Washington, which originally appeared on the 1932 Washington Quarter.
  • Designed by John Flanagan.

Reverse:

  • Depiction of El Capitan, a granite cliff that rises more than 3,000 feet above the valley floor. It is one of the famous areas of Yosemite National Park.
  • Designed by Joseph Menna and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill.

Coin Details:

  • The third release of the America the Beautiful Quarter series, which will run from 2010 until at least 2021.
  • The Philadelphia and Denver Mints will produce coins for circulation and special uncirculated (satin finish) versions for collectors. The San Francisco Mint will produce proof and silver proof versions.
  • The standard issue coins will have a composition of 91.67% copper and 8.33% nickel. The silver proof coins will have a composition of 90% silver, 10% copper.

Where to Find:

  • The Yosemite America the Beautiful Quarters will be released for general circulation, with the tentative release date set for July 26, 2010.
  • The United States Mint will sell 100-coin bags and two roll sets of circulation strike coins.
  • Proof, silver proof, and satin finish versions of the coins will be included as part of various annual sets offered by the US Mint.

History:

  • The broader series was authorized by Public Law 110-456 America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008.
  • Yosemite National Park was revealed as the site selected for California on September 9, 2009, as part of an announcement of the full site register and series America the Beautiful Quarters release schedule.
  • The final designs for all five 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters were revealed by the United States Mint during a special ceremony held on March 24, 2010.
