Coin Details:

  • The 2010 Platinum Eagle has only been offered as a one ounce proof coin. The purity of the platinum is .9995 and the legal tender face value of the coin is $100.
  • In previous years, the US Mint had offered bullion platinum eagles, fractional weight proof coins, and collectible uncirculated coins. The bullion coins have been on hiatus due to heavy demand for gold and silver bullion, and the additional collector versions were discontinued at the end of 2008.
  • The 2010 Proof Platinum Eagle has a maximum mintage of 10,000 coins and comes packaged in a tri-fold binder containing a description of the concept “To Establish Justice” written by the Chief Justice of the United States.

Where to Find:

  • The 2010 Proof Platinum Eagle was briefly available for sale directly from the United States Mint. Sales began on August 12, 2010, and the entire maximum mintage was sold by August 19, 2010.
  • With the coins sold out at the US Mint, the only place to acquire them is now the secondary market.

History:

  • The American Platinum Eagle was introduced in 1997 to compliment the existing bullion product line of the United States Mint, which already included Gold Eagles and Silver Eagles. Coins were available in one ounce, one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce, and one-tenth ounce sizes. Proof Platinum Eagles across all weights were also available for collectors, and collectible uncirculated versions were offered from 2006 to 2008.
  • As the years moved on and the price of platinum increased, sales of the Platinum Eagle bullion and collector coins experienced a general decline.
  • The US Mint has not issued bullion Platinum Eagles since 2008. During 2009 and 2010, only the one ounce proof version of the coin has been available.
